ARQUIMEA signs its first contract in the US to develop technology for NASA

March 23, 2021
  • ARQUIMEA USA has concluded an agreement with Intelligent Optical System (IOS) to develop a technology for NASA to integrate CO2 sensors into spacesuits.
  • The project consists of the integration of CO2 sensors in the spacesuits for real time monitoring during crew training at the NBL (Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory).

Los Angeles, April 2021. – ARQUIMEA, a multi-sector and international technology company that operates globally and develops innovative solutions and products in highly demanding sectors of activity has expanded its business areas to USA.

The R&D company reached an agreement with Intelligent Optical Systems (IOS) to jointly develop sensor technology for NASA.

The project consists of the integration of CO2 sensors in the spacesuits for real time monitoring during crew training at the NBL (Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory). This joint development agreement facilitates the use of a unique and innovative technology invented by the scientific experts of IOS and ARQUIMEA USA.

This system, which is known as the NIOGS system (Non-Invasive Optical Gas Sensing), uses sensitive and flexible patches that are placed inside the spacesuit’s helmet, interrogated by optical fibers routed outside the suit, taking advantage of the helmet’s transparent materials.

This technology leverages the work done by the team of scientists from ARQUIMEA and IOS, in multiple projects for NASA.

The first prototype of the NIOGS monitor has already been tested with great success in the laboratories of the Johnson Space Center. It is currently being prepared for deployment at the NBL in March 2021.

ARQUIMEA has a large experience in technology applied to different areas and sectors. In the expansion to the United States, the technological group will continue working in the generation of ideas and their development with the objective of promoting R&D as an engine of the American society.
